Build-Up Symbols in Fire Gnomes

In the base game of Fire Gnomes, Build-Up symbols land on reels one and four on top of regular icons, then slide away to shelves on either side of the grid. Barrels on those shelves stand for wild symbols or multiplier wilds that can later be fired onto the reel set. Shields stand for Silver or Gold prizes, and new shields add their credit values onto whatever is already sitting on that shelf spot.

In my sessions with Fire Gnomes, the shelves feel like a savings jar for future fireworks. Silver prizes usually sit between about 7.5x and 100x bet, while Gold can reach 500x if you are lucky enough to stack them. Because those prizes are additive, each extra shield on the same space raises the eventual payout, so long spells without activations can turn quite tasty when a Feature Activation finally shows up.

The Big BuildUp feature in Fire Gnomes triggers when one or more Feature Activation symbols land anywhere on reels two or three. There are four types in the base game, and any of them can wake up several shelf awards at once. When the gnomes get to work, barrels on the sides shoot regular wilds or multiplier wilds straight across their rows, while Silver and Gold Build-Up prizes pay out their collected credit totals.

I like how Fire Gnomes almost flips the normal idea of dead spins. When nothing connects on the grid, you are often collecting more barrels and shields instead, which makes the next activation spin feel loaded. Sometimes a single Feature Activation symbol only fires one award, sometimes several shelves go off together. That can fill the screen with wilds and multipliers in one swoop and drop chunky instant prizes at the same time.

Fire Gnomes Bonus Game

The Fire Gnomes bonus game needs two scatter symbols at once, one on reel one and one on reel four. When that happens the reels stop spinning and every position gains either a credit value, usually between 0.3x and 10x, or a special bonus symbol. You start with five spins, and on each one at least one gnome rolls a bomb with a multiplier that lands on a random position on the grid.

If a bomb hits a plain credit, that amount is multiplied straight away and marked as activated. Hitting a Retrigger symbol adds extra spins equal to the bomb value and turns that symbol into an active credit. One special symbol increases all activated credits by its own number times the bomb. Row and Column symbols light every spot in their line with the multiplier, while the Orthogonal symbol works on positions above, below and to each side.

My better rounds have landed in the several hundred times bet range, which matches the solid top potential on paper.

Fire Gnomes: Slot Verdict

For me, Fire Gnomes sits on the more approachable side of this studio’s output, yet it still has that oddball charm and plenty going on. The aim is simple enough: pile up barrels and cash prizes on the shelves, then wait for a strong Big BuildUp or bonus game to land. I do keep an eye on the RTP setting at each site though, as alternative versions with lower returns exist.
